Hundreds of republican demonstrators opposed to the Love Ulster rally involving Orangemen and relatives of IRA murder victims fought running battles with gardai
(= ierse politie).Security lines were attacked with fireworks, rocks, bottles and metal barricades. At least four officers and a journalist were injured.
Cars were also set alight close to Leinster House, the Irish Parliament buildings, amid heightening violence.
All shops, in one of the city's main retail districts, shut their doors as the thugs went on the rampage.
As the trouble worsened the parade through Dublin city centre was cancelled.
The violence has been condemned by Irish PM Bertie Ahern who said: "There is absolutely no excuse for the disgraceful scenes in Dublin.
"It is the essence of Irish democracy and republicanism that people are allowed express their views freely and in a peaceful manner."
Officers injured in Dublin riot Sunday February 26Irish police clash with protesters in Dublin
Dublin has been hit by a republican riot as thousands of Welsh rugby fans gather in the city for Sunday's Six Nations game against Ireland.
Several police officers and a journalist were hurt during Saturday's disturbances in the city centre.
They began in O'Connell Street, where a unionist rally remembering victims of republican violence was to start.
Stones and fireworks were thrown after republicans mounted a counter-march. The loyalist rally was then cancelled.
Up to 1,000 people had been expected to take part in the Love Ulster rally to remember those affected by republican violence.
DUP and Ulster Unionist politicians were among those who had hoped to parade through the centre of the city, in a march organised by the victims group Fair.
A delegation was to meet the Republic's Justice Minister, Michael McDowell after the march.
Earlier this week, the Republic's Foreign Affairs Minister, Dermot Ahern, said the government had hoped the parade would pass off peacefully.
